How to install Microsoft Exchange 2007 on Windows 2003
Posted by: bruntech in Microsoft Exchange server, Microsoft Windows ServerYou have a Windows 2003 Domain controller, that is also your Windows 2003 DNS server. You also have a Windows 2003 member server.
On this Windows 2003 member server we are going to install Exchange 2007.
So let’s jump right in and log on as a domain administrator on the Windows 2003 member server. Either put your Exchange 2007 cd into your server or run the install from a local drive on the server. If you download from Microsoft’s web site then you will have to point to a folder to extract the install files for Microsoft Exchange 2007.
Some refer to Exchange 2007 as Exchange 2007 server, however all that means is that Microsoft Exchange 2007 is running on a Windows 2003 Server.
When you run setup Microsoft Exchange server 2007 main screen comes up. You should take the time to read information under the Plan heading. When you are reading you will notice that there are steps to install Microsoft Exchange server 2007, steps 1 thru 5. See print screen below. You will run each install for each step. If files are all ready installed they will be skipped by the Windows installer if you try to install them.

So go ahead and install Microsoft .Net 2.0 framework and Microsoft Windows PowerShell.
Once .Net and PowerShell are installed start the install for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007. You will be presented with a introduction window, Exchange server 2007 SP1 setup. Click Next when you are ready.

Read the Microsoft License agreement and then click Next. Then you are presented to take part in Error Reporting. Chose yes or no. If you chose yes, your server will send information that is not specific to your company etc. Error Reporting sends information to Microsoft about your Exchange server 2007 in terms of errors. This information is used by Microsoft to help decide what hot fixes need to be created etc.
next your are presented with Installation type. Generally unless you are doing things like clustering, you can chose Typical Exchange Server Installation.

Next enter the name of your Organization. We put myitkb lab, Click Next. (notice the exclamation mark, this means your name is invalid)

For Client settings you want to answer yes if you have pc’s running Microsoft Outlook 2003 or older like Microsoft Outlook 2000 or 97.

Then is the Readiness Checks. This checks for automatic updates, Client Access Role Prerequisites, and Mailbox Role Prerequisites. As long as you do not have errors you should be able to continue. In our case we had errors. We needed to reboot the server after the .Net 2.0 install, and assign a static IP to the server.

After you have resolved all the issues the Readiness has found, this may include updates or installing software depending on what the Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Readiness Checks setup has found. Go ahead and click on Install.
(note in order to install Exchange Server 2007 SP1 the Active Directory domain function level needs to Windows 2003. Also note that the 32-bit version of Exchange Server 2007 is not supported for Production environments)

The actual installation of Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1 starts and is configured by the wizard.
-> First thing the wizard does is import the Active directory schema, which can take awile to import. One of the things that can expedite the installation of Exchange Server 2007 SP1 is to make the server a domain controller. This can be done on small networks, like for example 50 users or less. On larger networks, Microsoft recommends not making the Exchange Server 2007 SP1 a domain controller. It took 10 minutes to import Active directory schema into a new domain that has very few objects. just tot give you an idea how long it will take a real environment.
->Then exchange files are copied and installed.
-> Management Tools are then installed
-> Configure HUB transport Role and install performance counters
-> Install the Client Access Role. ( this allows clients using applications like Microsoft Outlook )
-> Finally the Mailbox Role is installed ( the MDB, mailbox performance counters, DAV counters, public folders, IIS Admin, etc. are configured)

Click on Finish when completed. And reboot the server when you are ready. After you reboot the server you are will want tot run the critical updates for Exchange Server 2007 SP1 .
