“What spam blocking software can you recommend?”

Well there are a lot of them out there. However, in Outlook 2007, you can use Junk E-mail filter to handle your spam. Outlook 2007’s Junk E-mail filter does a good job but at at times does “make mistakes”. I put that in quotes because more often than not when an email is marked as junk mail, it is because the user created a rule that caused this. More about this later. Read along to enable Junk E-mail in Microsoft Outlook 2007.

Open up your Outlook 2007 client.

(For purposes of this article, we will assume that you have Outlook 2007 installed correctly and a mailbox configured within Outlook.)

On the left hand side you will see many folders, scroll down to the folder that says Junk E-Mail and double click on that folder.

In this Junk E-mail folder, all email that is spam or junk email will be stored here. OK, now we know were the spam is stored, how do we get into this folder?

As you receive junk email, you right click on the email that you do not want or is spam and right click on it. Select Add Sender to Blocked Senders List (see image below).

This helps Outlook to learn what type of email you want to be put into the Junk E-mail folder. Any future email from this sender will be moved to the Junk E-Mail folder. (we will discuss how to move existing email to the Junk E-Mail folder later)

If you make a mistake and mark an email from someone that you don’t want to be sent to the Junk E-mail folder, you can go into the Junk E-mail folder on the left hand frame. Locate the email. Once you found your friendly email, the one that you want to keep and not mark as junk email, right click on that email and select Add Sender to Safe Sender’s List, (see image below)

JunkEmail rightclick2

Now, any future emails from the sender will not be marked as Junk E-Mail and moved to the Junk E-mail folder.

Doing all this manually can be tedious, so if you change the security level of Office 2007’s Junk E-mail filter, Outlook will efficiently mark email as Junk (SPAM) and move the email to the Junk E-mail folder. In fact Outlook will catch all most all SPAM and even some valid emails. This is why it is import to check the folder often to make sure your friend is not unintentionally put into the Junk E-mail folder. If they are marked as junk, just follow the steps above to add the Sender to the Safe Sender List.

To make Outlook more aggressive when scanning for SPAM, right click on any email and click on Junk Email Options. See the picture below for the options to select.

JunkEmail options

Click on OK when your options look the same as the above picture.

Outlook is now more secure, you can now also mark or unmark emails as being Junk email or valid email.

Good information. Just as an aside, Outlook can do a good job of handling SPAM, but there are times that other third party applications like webroot’s spysweeper are needed. The application like spysweeper downloads an information file that helps SpySweeper be more proactive than Outlook is. Of course there are other application also.

Thanks George. You are correct, Outlook Junk E-Mail filter is not the end all solution, but another tool that focuses just on blocking spam.

Spy Sweeper, yes works very well, but is not focused on blocking SPAM. It is used to block spyware.

But that is not to say that one does not need an anit-spyware application also.. In fact everyone should have a Anit-Spyware/Anit-Virus soliution like Mcafee etc. :a)
