We all have had to take a print screen of our desktop or Window. On Windows XP we would use tools like Gadwin Systems PrintScreen. Tools like PrintScreen can do things like drag a box around an object instead of taking a print screen of a whole window which makes tools like this very powerful and useful.

However, on Windows Vista, third party tools that take print screens are are almost of the past. I say almost, because I had to use a third party tool to take screen shots of Snipping Tool for this Blog. So, there is one feature that Snipping Tool can not do is take a screen shot of itself.

Windows Vista’s Snipping Tool can be launched from Start, All Programs, Accessories, Snipping Tool.

Snipping Tool 1

If you click on New, Snipping Tool freezes the desktop and allows you to use the mouse to drag a box around the object that you want to take a screen shot of.

There are a total of four different screen Snipping Tool types you can chose from..

Snipping Tool 2

Free-form Snip, Rectangular Snip, Windows Snip, and Full Screen Snip.

We already spoke about the Rectangular Snip, the other cool snipping type is Free-Form Snip. This allows you to take a screen shot of any shape.

The Windows Snip and Full-Screen Snip take screen shots of the active Window and the other will take a screen shot, a snip of the whole desktop.
